It’s a new year and a new semester. All around campus, Fashionistas cling onto their new notebooks, pens and agendas. Nothing beats the feeling of starting fresh and having a whole bunch of new outfits picked out and ready to show off at Uni (thanks to wonderful holiday shopping). Fashionistas, don’t lose this optimism moving forward in the semester even in the toughest of times (I know that midterms can bring out the worst in us aka the dreaded hoodie and sweatpants combo). This is a complete cliché, but your campus halls are your runways. Don’t be afraid to create an image for yourself this new semester! Fashion statements are always welcomed on campus.
This week CollegeFashionista readers, presentation and detailing are key. This Fashionista is wearing a black overcoat from Topshop. It is a strong basic piece that really shapes the whole outfit and decides for you what accessories need to be added on. This is where the idea of presentation comes in. I love how this Fashionista adds delicate details and splashes of colour to her outfit with the blue Club Monaco button-up, white hat and tan boots from Nordstrom. They complement the entire look in the simplest way, and it really recreates her standard all-black winter look, which we see so often on the streets.
The feminine detailing in this outfit from head to toe is phenomenal. Check out these Fashionista’s socks! The frilly ankle socks are back in and they provide a Lolita-esque spark to any outfit. The girlish frills paired with the high-heeled boot are such a pretty little touch and it’s a great way to switch up the look of any shoe. It also fills in the space between the boot and the rolled-up black pant perfectly. Moving up the outfit, the Fashionista’s gold Michael Kors Bradshaw watch is a perfect accessory — it is both subtle and eye-catching.
Now, whatever you may call it, a beanie or a toque (Canadian lingo), the Fashionista’s white BCBGMAXAZRIA hat is incredibly trendy and adorable with the added veil and pompom. Beanies are items we see so often on campus, so why not find one with elegant detailing to make it stand out amongst the crowd?
Remember Fashionistas, when you have classic black pieces to work with, don’t be afraid to have fun with it by adding simple colour and detailing to personalize your outfit. By playing up your look with feminine items, like our Fashionista did with her socks and beanie, the whole outfit becomes coherent and not to over-the-top. It’s the perfect statement to make right after returning to class from winter break. Happy 2014, Fashionistas!
