STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Fashion Goes To Washington

Style Advice of the Week

American flag themed clothing and accessories was a big trend over the summer of 2012. From denim shorts and jackets to shoes printed with stars and stripes, the look was everywhere. Some people assume that it’s only acceptable to show patriotism through their clothing on the 4th of July or around election time, but it’s never unfashionable to be an American.

I ran into a Fashionista who carried last summer’s trend into the winter. She paired an oversized American flag sweater with some olive green velvet leggings for a cozy nationalistic look. She added some Isabel Marant-esque booties with tassles that play off the fringe of her bag. She added a bold red lip and a chic messy bun for a relaxed, yet pulled-together effect.

If you want to get this week’s Fashionista’s look, check out Brandy Melville where you can find the same American flag sweater. As for the leggings, the American Apparel velvet ones in fern are a near perfect match. For shoes, the Isabel Marant Dicker suede ankle boots are a serious investment, which will go with practically anything. They are also a great piece for seasonal transitioning. Wear them with shorts and flowy tops in the spring and summer or pair them with skinny pants and sweaters in the fall and winter. To complete the look, add this green Ralph Lauren Collection fringed flat suede cross-body bag. It is the perfect thing to toss over your shoulder on your way out the door.

Whether it’s July 4th or March 4th, don’t be afraid to show respect for your homeland. There is nothing wrong with sartorially expressing some national pride. Add an American flag piece to your wardrobe and show how proud you are to be an American Fashionista/o!
