Style Advice of the Week

Last week the sky opened up and showed Wake Forest students the first real signs of winter weather in our beautiful state of North Carolina. Thursday evening, our third straight night of slush, as I planned my outfit for Friday and watched the snow fall down in golf ball sized flakes I thought “Rain boots and a T-shirt…again?”

Dressing for true winter weather can be the ultimate test of a Fashionista’s styling skills, especially when you live in a warm southern state. Here, it feels like shorts and sandals are appropriate year-round and the mere thought of snow on the ground is enough to induce wardrobe panic. This week, if you are enjoying the same temperature drops we are, I challenge you to buck your go-to “cold weather comfy” outfit (you know the one, it involves leggings and an oversized sweater) and instead put together a stylish, warm winter ensemble.

This Fashionista makes cold weather look so chic pairing a luxe flannel shirt with perfectly tailored dark skinny jeans. Slouchy, black boots pull her look together, creating a final product that says stylish rather than shivering. She beautifully juxtaposes the masculine feel of her cozy top by selecting a pair of denim jeans with a feminine silhouette. By opting for boots in a sexier style, rather than a clunky pair of snow boots, she remains put together yet practical. Love this look as much as I do? The trick to rocking a flannel shirt without looking frumpy is fit; shop for cuts that are slim through the body and have shoulder seams that truly land on your shoulder blades, ensuring a classic tailored look that your closet will thank you for.
