STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Evaluate Your Go-Tos

The alarm goes off for the second time since you began hitting the snooze button. You realize that you need to get up if you are going to make it to your 8:30 a.m. class on time. You jump out of bed and begin the 15 minute countdown to when you need to be walking out your door. So what do you do?

I know a few of you are thinking, “Why wouldn’t you just set your outfit out the night before?” But let me stop you there. Quite frankly, I am not the type of person to pre-plan all of my outfits and will probably never be that person. If you can relate, then I have some style advice for you: fashion go-tos. Go-to items are essentially stylish pieces that you love to wear, that you look great in and that can fit into almost any ensemble.

Now, I am sure a few of you have already started making a list of your go-to items in your head, which is notable because that means that you have a grip on your style. If, on the other hand, you are drawing a blank, don’t sweat it. I am here to help you out. You can figure out your go-to fashion items by looking through your closet and picking out your favorite pieces of clothing or by scrolling through your personal Instagram feed to hunt for the items you wear frequently and that bring out that inner Fashionista.

To give you a little inspiration on what your go-to list can consist of, I turn to this month’s Fashionista. I will breakdown her outfit into three fashion go-tos: denim jackets, distressed T-shirts and knots. First, denim jackets. This timeless piece is a must-have for the upcoming season. Not only is this outerwear extremely stylish, but it is also so easy. You can pair it with almost anything, especially a rugged T-shirt. Which, brings us to our next go-to, distressed T-shirts.

Distressed shirts are a necessity. Comparable to denim jackets, distressed shirts can be coupled with many different bottoms. Grab your distressed T-shirt, some leggings and a pair of adidas, and you are ready to go. If you don’t want to spend upwards of $200 on a T-shirt or a couple hours on a handmade project, you still have plenty of options with the help of online shopping. Copy this Fashionista’s distressed T-shirt from NFBD.

My last go-to for you is not so much of a fashion piece, but a fashion trick. If you feel your shirt or dress is not sitting right or that your outfit is missing something, tie a knot. This technique is an essential one to master.

Once you make a mental list of your go-to items, you can start to implement these pieces all the time, including when school becomes too hectic and you can no longer spend 30 minutes picking out your outfit. No matter how much time you have, you can always be fashionable!
