There is something to be said for that rare type of girl who has a perfectly honed and developed sense of personal style. My own style has undergone too many evolutions to count (there was a brief Gossip Girl-inspired period circa 10th grade when I wore bow headbands with hot pink tights à la Blair Waldorf), so that type of consistency and self-awareness has never been my strong suit; on any given shopping trip, I’m torn between buying a pair of studded combat boots that remind me of something Joan Jett would have worn or a silk J.Crew blouse that would look better paired with pearl earrings.
My friend, and personal style inspiration, Keri O’Mara, however, has signature style that is so quintessentially “Keri” that I had to feature her on this edition of STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK. On any given day, Keri’s outfit choices have a vintage vibe and an effortless feel about them that would take me hours to come up with myself. What she describes as “hobo chic,” her wardrobe is filled with plush knits, unique scarves and flattering earth tones that complement any complexion perfectly.
To emulate this Fashionista’s vintage-inspired sartorial sensibilities, try this Free People pullover layered over a basic tank and your favorite black skinnies. My favorite piece from this look is Keri’s army-green anorak coat. Khaki-green is an underused neutral color, but it can really be paired with just about anything. It looks fantastic on everyone, and Keri’s coat reminds me of the one Lindsay Weir, the girl who made tomboy style a fashion statement, wore on Freaks and Geeks. Lindsay always wore her dad’s army surplus jacket, and you can find a similar style at Urban Outfitters.
Basic L.L.Bean boots are a fantastic staple for the winter months — they’re waterproof and offer great traction in the snow and a great deal for boots you will use for years to come. Wool socks peaking out of her boots offer a pop of color, and really show your personality with a fun, embroidered scarf (the more unique, the better). Try this woven style from Urban Outfitters, or this leather-fringe version for added individuality. Finish off the look with a leather cross-body bag just large enough to hold your phone, keys and other essentials!
