Style Advice of the Week

Being on trend doesn’t always mean taking a risk in fashion. One of the biggest trends for spring 2014 is earth tones and neutrals, an easy look that can go from runway to everyday. Natural and earthy colors are a perfect way to feel at home with blooming nature without wearing a bold floral skirt or flower crown.  It also allows you to look put together while still layering pieces until the weather warms up (uhm, hello, it’s still 35 degrees here in Wisconsin!). What could be a better combination than fashion forward and super cozy?

I spotted this Fashionista working the earth tone trend with a simple, olive green utility jacket and a tan mini skirt paired with black leggings underneath. For an extra comfy look, she added thick gray socks to pair with her dark brown lace-up booties. Her brown satchel is partially leather, adding to the natural vibe of the outfit. I love that peeking out from her jacket is a gorgeous light blue sweater, demonstrating how you easily you can combine the pastel and earth tone trends. Her printed scarf picks up the blue from the sweater and the neutral colors from the rest of her outfit, while adding a fun fringe detailing that is very hot this season. She chose to leave her hair down in natural waves, keeping the look easy and fresh. The slight ombre of her locks also ties together the mix of light and dark neutrals in her ensemble.

To accomplish an earthy look, opt for simple pieces instead of bold prints. A military inspired jacket or a brown leather jacket would make a great statement piece while staying true to the natural, down to earth vibe. If you want to experiment adding other trends into the look, you could go for a pastel top like this Fashionista or try something different, like a neutral metallic skirt. A scarf with fringed edges adds a fun, edgy vibe while tying together all the different earth tones and textures of an outfit. For an added spring vibe, try a fold-over combat boot with small floral details. Just enough floral will make you feel like springtime without being covered head to toe in daisies. Remember, down-to-earth style is all about getting inspiration from Mother Nature, not being a direct copy.
