STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Double The Leopard

A bold but risky way to style an outfit is through pattern mixing. Magazine advertisements feature models in eccentric outfits of striped sweaters and paisley pants, and somehow it still manages to look good. The concept is baffling to me. Although challenging, the idea is not impossible. It just takes some planning! The Fashionista in this article chose a simple way of mixing patterns to show us how to ease into the idea of patterns.

The pattern that she is showcasing is leopard animal print. Instead of mixing two different patterns, she chose to mix two different versions of the same print in her dress and bag. Choosing to incorporate the second pattern in an accessory is a smart choice for first time pattern mixers. For some, this concept is too daring, so an accessory is a good way to feature a second pattern without worrying if it is too over the top.

These leopard patterns work well together because of the complementary colors and similar sizes. The black and beige color in the tote bag is extremely similar to the color of the leopard spots on her dress, and both are similar in size orientation. Therefore, it is not too distracting to the eye. However, the glossy texture of the printed portion of the bag contrasts with the matte cotton dress which differentiates the patterns nicely.

Her outfit consists of a green leopard T-shirt dress draped under a maroon cardigan. The deep color of the cardigan is a strong way to offset the bold pattern in the dress and bag. She paired her dress with sheer tights since it is not warm enough to go bare legged yet. She added some riding boots and, most importantly, her leopard print tote bag.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Start simple! Patterns can be overwhelming. Chose one or two that you like first, and try mixing them in different ways. Don’t forget about using fun accessories like shoes, scarves and bags as an option.”
