STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Distressed is Best

Autumn in New York City is magical. The air gets crisp, leaves fall and Central Park makes the heart of every hopeless romantic explode with pumpkin spice excitement. Now, if we are being honest, autumn in New York City is where the magic happens, NOT September. As September rolls around it brings along extreme heat, horrifying humidity and warm rain. NYFW steals the heart of each fashion-loving girl in the city every September and the fall wardrobe finally emerges, but deciding what to wear makes the heart feel faint. It is too hot to wear fur and boots, but summer is a thing of the past, so denim cutoffs are not an option. But, do not fret, the perfect solution to this mid-September heat: destroyed and loose-fitting denim.

Of course, black pants or jeans are a wardrobe staple, especially of a New Yorker. The versatility of black pants is synonymous with the utility of a perfect black tote and, most recently, a camel coat for winter. On the spring 2015 runways, jeans of every cut and style appeared to be a staple for those “inbetweener” seasons that can be easily passed down to fall, like a roughed up pair of Hood by Air jeans.

On this Fashionista, black distressed jeans are the best staple of the outfit, offering the feelings of fall without the painful heat of the weather that feels more like summer. The breathability of the big rips make the jeans wearable in early fall. Paired with a casual tank top and dainty necklaces, the outfit can be low-key and perfect for an early morning class, but with the switch to heeled sandals, it goes seamlessly from day to night. Ripped jeans in black, light, white or army green denim are a perfect investment because it can be taken from season to season and never seems to go out of style. The distressed-jean look is one of the staples of each and every spring and fall season. Whether it is making your own from an old thrifted pair of jeans or heading to Zara and letting someone else do the distressing for you, casual and comfy jeans have never looked, or felt, so good.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Be yourself! Sometimes we try to copy what is trending or what the fashion industry says is in, but in reality, in order for us to stand out in a crowd (like college is), we must follow our own sense of style. It doesn’t matter if what you are wearing someone else doesn’t like, what matters is that you feel comfortable and confident in it. If you feel beautiful, I assure you, you will look beautiful!”
