STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim Daydreams

Fall is finally here in Michigan, which means that the weather is slowly cooling down. Students around my campus are turning in their sandals for their new boots, and layering is becoming much more common as we head into the colder months of the year. The temperatures in Michigan are still into the 70s at this point, which means one thing: cold in the morning and hot by the afternoon. It can be difficult to plan accordingly for this frustrating change in temperature, but I found a Fashionista on campus that was able to handle this time of the year in a stylish fashion.

This Fashionista took a major risk when it came to layering and it worked. Denim on denim is a trend that can either look chic or go horribly wrong. Her attention to denim washes and interesting pieces kept her from going into Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake territory. She told me that denim on denim is a trend that she loves to play around with, and is usually wearing some sort of denim piece at any given time. This Fashionista also told me that multiple pieces in her look were thrifted, which gives the rest of us hope that we too can find amazing pieces like the ones featured in this outfit.

She started out with a denim shirt that features a unique zipper detail instead of the standard button closures. She then tucked the shirt into a pair of distressed jeans that are a lighter wash. These slight differences in denim wash play a key role in the outfit’s success, and she continued the differences with an oversized denim jacket that hit the right length, giving it different levels to keep the eye interested. To complete the look and keep it simple, this Fashionista put on a pair of white slip on shoes that contrast the all-denim outfit.

This Fashionista’s ability to make the outfit work in the cold morning and the hot afternoon is also a source of inspiration. By the time the temperature hits 70 degrees, she is able to take the denim jacket and tie it around her waist. This keeps the outfit chic and keeps this Fashionista cool as she walks around campus.
