STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Dark Does Not Mean Drab

Style Advice of the Week

If you read my biography, you know that I am a sucker for dark colors. There’s just something about the way that they contrast from the rest of the color spectrum. Perhaps it’s the fact that darker colors are often associated with mystery and “blending in with the shadows”. Or maybe it’s because they create such effortlessly stylish outfits. Yes. I think that is the reason.

This Fashionista wore True Religion medium-wash jeans and paired a black knit sweater  from J.Crew with a and Urban Outfitters black leather jacket—something that many people might hesitate to do because it is either “too boring” or “too depressing.” Contrary to popular belief, wearing black on black isn’t only suitable for funerals. In fact, it can look rather fashionable. Take a basic black knit sweater and put a black leather jacket or any type of heavier, industrial-style jacket on top to achieve this dark, yet chic and simple look.

The best part about this outfit is that it is plain (in the best way possible, of course), so you have a lot of freedom to accessorize. I thought the earrings were the highlight of the outfit because they were the first component of the outfit to catch my eye. They are triangular in shape and slightly longer in length, falling right above her chin. Both the shape and the length of her earrings flatter her face shape. In addition, they provide a smooth contrast to her black clothes, but still add to the subdued look because of their neutral gunmetal gray color. Geometric earrings serve as excellent accessories to unembellished outfits.

Lastly, this Fashionista threw on black Steve Madden combat boots to complete her look. Combat boots are fabulous because they usually complement any street style outfit. They also come in many different colors, so if you feel like this outfit has needs a pop of color, a pair of colorful Dr. Martens will do the trick.

So, the moral of the story is that black on black outfits are not only for mourning or ninjas or death metal bands for that matter. Keep in mind that you can always accessorize and add pops of color. Lastly, remember to smile and be confident because you will look beautiful.
