As I was walking back to my dorm from a long day of class (not really paying any attention to what was around me), I looked up and saw this Fashionista’s outfit. I just had to stop her!
This Fashionista was spotted wearing a black, graphic statement sweater with plaid shorts that looked like a skirt. She ties the look together by wearing sporty knee-highs and a pair of studded loafers.
When I first noticed this Fashionista’s outfit, I thought she was wearing a plaid skirt. When I started to take detail shots, I noticed that there were sewn separation for her legs. Shorts of this nature are called culotte shorts. The term culotte originates from the aristocratic, knee-length wear of French men from the 1500s. Culottes of that period were somewhat baggy from the thighs, and fastened tightly at the knees.
To recreate this Fashionista’s outfit, look for a pair of plaid culotte shorts. These shorts from ASOS paired with this NASTY GAL statement sweater serve as a varied alternative to the Fashionista’s edgy look. This outfit is looks almost like Dionne (from the movie Clueless) in revolt. For a bit of a refined look, opt for a brightly colored skirt. This skirt is a bit more structured than the culotte shorts that our Fashionista is wearing, and the front of the “skort” is geometrically cut. The clean lines of the bottoms are what give it a more refined look. Complete this outfit with a graphic sweater, and you’re set. As for shoes, studded loafers are a great choice. If you’re looking for a more punk look, reach for a pair of creepers.
