There’s no denying how big cropped tops have become. Back in elementary school, I would cry over my desperate need for a “belly-shirt,” as they were called during the early millennium years. A few years later, I winced every time I thought about my love for such clothing, and vowed to myself that I’d never long for such a silhouette again.
Alas, those tops did return but with a different term to describe them. And, of course, I’m back to being in love with them. The trick, however, to making them work for anyone no matter what their comfort level, is to match it with a suitable garment on the bottom. That way, only a sliver of stomach shows at most and they look cute, rather than cringe-worthy.
Going back to my elementary school trend-following, I also craved for something that would show off my shoulders. The more skin, the better, essentially. I would envy my female peers as they sashayed into class with their then-hip clothing. Thankfully, that off-the-shoulder drape has come back for the better as well.
This week’s Fashionista rocks a look that bares both the shoulder and the torso, but ever so slightly. Her awesome, baggy top with the fresh Southwestern print adds the perfect summery flair. She cleverly pairs the top with some high-waisted denim shorts, steering away from the shiver-inducing belly-shirt look from the past. For footwear, she chose to go with some comfortable black sandals that can be slipped on in a snap.
After the lovely cropped and draped top, the next item that really caught my eye was her amazing bag. Aside from being the perfect size for the girl-on-the-go, the bright cobalt with lime and yellow shades in the embroidery truly make her stand out in a crowd. Props to her for not shying away from color!
If you would like to try a similar look to this Fashionista’s, definitely head to Forever 21 for some of the best loose-fitting cropped tops. Make sure to look for one with a neck wide enough so that you can pull at the sleeve a bit to expose the shoulder area to your liking. Next find a pair of high-waisted shorts. These summer staples are usually found in abundance at Urban Outfitters, but if you are willing to spend a little more money, definitely invest in the American Apparel ones. As for accessories, Aldo has some of the greatest summer sandals that are high in comfort. As for the bag, Target usually has some nice totes in bright colors. For an alternative, of course, you can probably find all of these items at a local thrift store for a bargain. Either way, remember to keep it fresh and fun!
