Picture the mid-1980s. Rock ‘n’ roll has become more than just music. It’s a style, a mindset and a way of life. The spirits of young souls are bursting as they explore new ideas of thinking and break down the barriers of the social norm. Outrage and angst fill the lyrics as an entirely new age develops. This is the birth of grunge.
Grunge fashion embodied the same attitude as the music it followed. Elements of heavy metal and punk merged together, which was reflected in the garb of grunge fans. From their graphic T-shirts to their dirty sneakers and ripped everything, followers of this rock movement never failed to express exactly what was on their minds and in their boom boxes.
Our Fashionista’s look this week definitely smells like teen spirit. With her cropped chambray button-down, ripped leggings and studded sneakers, this little lady has given a new name to grunge-chic. Although her look may seem too cool for school, it’s the perfect casual campus look. Throw on any of these easy pieces individually or wear a similar look and you’ll make a statement while staying comfortable in your afternoon lecture. My favorite part of her outfit is definitely her shoes. Who wouldn’t want to kick back in class with a cool pair of kicks like these?
The goal of grunge musicians was always simply to rock out. I hope you’re all ready to do just that with a rockin’ wardrobe this fall. The chambray shirt was a top pick this summer and it continues to be this season too! For a cropped version similar to our Fashionista’s, pair one like this from Forever 21 with faded black denim shorts and classic Converse high tops. If you want to mix it up, try a sleeveless version or undo the buttons and reveal a tank underneath. Leggings have also been very popular in the past few seasons. A ripped pair like our Fashionista’s are definitely rock ‘n’ roll. You could also pick out acid wash leggings and wear them with a flannel button-down over a graphic T-shirt. As for me, these roughed up and studded sneakers from Steve Madden are my next must-do purchase!
And boys, bring out your best ripped denim and favorite grunge T-shirt for an awesome grunge look this fall. Turn up the volume on a Pearl Jam record and kick back with a copy of Rolling Stone. Let your teen spirit free as you unleash the rock ‘n’ roll in your soul. Get down and dirty with grunge fashion this fall, Fashionistas and Fashionistos!
