Scotland. Home to haggis, the Loch Ness Monster and the unicorn. (It’s true. Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn. Amazing.) It is also home to one of the greatest trends to hit fashion: tartan. Worn by King Geogre IV once upon a time, tartan and its timeless Highland style has given Fashionistas and Fashionistos a flair throughout the decades. In the 1980s, fashionable punks and Madonna-inspired girls, along with their Dr. Martens and studded leather jackets, were rocking tartan. Today, contemporary tartan incorporates a little bit of that ‘80s punk edge and mixes it with sophisticated tailoring that is fit for a king (or queen).
From the likes of Vivienne Westwood to Chanel, and don’t forget Burberry who have adopted the Haymarket tartan as its trademark, tartan has proven it’s not just about the Scottish kilt or school girl skirts anymore. This past fall, tartan dominated street style. We saw numerous fashion bloggers revisit the fashion fad this season including Negin Mirsalehi and Aimee Song of Song of Style. They showed their audiences the different styles, widths and colours tartan can be worn in.
Wearing a predominantly black outfit, this Fashionista impresses in her emerald tailored tartan trousers from H&M. The slim fit of the pant allows for the lengthening of the leg, which is what any girl wants in a pair of pants. Her low-cut black blouse from Topshop that she tucks into the tartan trouser and black minimalist coat that she leaves unbuttoned are the perfect match for the outfit as they show off the pant. The outfit is structured to keep the tartan trouser at the forefront and as the major statement piece.
Another fabulous feature of the pant is its cut at the ankle. It’s polished and shows off the shoe. This Fashionista is sporting little black oxfords from Urban Outfitters, and what a great choice that is. The shoe gives the entire outfit that classical feel. To add another pop of colour, along with the emerald trouser, this Fashionista carries a brown H&M handbag that goes perfectly with the whole look. Accessories? This Fashionista nails it. First of all, that nose ring? Incredibly cool. She accents the outfit with a popping gold necklace, braclets and red lip. Oh, and that book the Fashionista is carrying? Not a book. Rather, a laptop case. And to finished off the enchanting tailored look, this Fashionista dawns Versace frames that give off an elegant touch.
From the runways to the streets, tartan has made its mark. The key to flaunting this heritage pattern is to give it a more contemporary spin. Tartan serves as the perfect backdrop for leather jackets, denim, sweatshirts and crop tops. The plaid textile design was one of the biggest trends of fall 2013, and there’s no doubt it’s a fashion that will continue on to 2014. I mean if King George IV was a tartan fan, I think that says a lot!
