STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Contemporary Grunge

Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Radiohead optimize the ’90s. The grunge punk-rock style has become a major influence on fashion since the bands’ respective musical debuts. The alternativeness associated with this particular music has permanently established an edgy style that will never fade. Some argue that this style is only restricted to the musical community it belongs to—I seem to differ. Music has various genres and sub-genres, and grunge captures this essence. Grunge is sometimes emotional, hardcore and even distorting. Grunge defines the spirit of fashion. In the words of the late Kurt Cobain, “Punk is musical freedom. It’s saying, doing and playing what you want.”

This particular Fashionista does exactly what she wants—in regards to her outfit. She captures both the essence of fashion, grunge and print freedom! This Fashionista is not afraid to combine plaid prints with tribal prints all while incorporating masculine elements into her look. Although the prints she selected are mostly associated with fall/winter, this Fashionista perfectly translates how tribal and plaid prints can work with the unpredictable spring weather and trends. The standout element of this Fashionista’s outfit is her tribal print romper. The strapless detail combined with the oversized gray-scaled plaid shirt emits a sense of contemporary grunge.

The hardness of ’90s grunge stayed in the ’90s, and the only thing that continued was the style’s attitude and soul. Alongside grunge attire this Fashionista also added masculine elements, acid washed denim (incorporated in the backpack) and working boots. The subtle incorporation of these masculine fashions gives the outfit a sense of rebellion. The ’90s had very questionable fashion styles (tracksuits, baggy skater jeans)—however, the idea of simplicity and minimalism that underlined all of the trends continues, even in the diverse fashions that exist today.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I recently went to Governors Ball, and everyone’s style was just so cool, comfortable and very bohemian. Being comfortable is very important and it should be your main priority when putting an outfit together.”
