To escape the bitter cold of the Canadian winter, I decided a quick trip to Southern California would be the perfect spring break getaway. In her hit single “California Gurls,” Katy Perry sings that it’s all about the daisy dukes and bikinis in California. This may be true considering the endless sun, sand and ocean supplied by the golden coast, but fashion in the sunshine state is so much more than beach wear. It may not be on the same level as fashion capitals like New York or Paris, but California has this certain je ne sais quoi about its fashion. It’s all about West Coast flavour. From chunky knits to floppy hats and breezy skirts to the cutest little ankle boots, California “gurls” are the founders of bohemian chic. I mean, have you seen the street style at Coachella Music Festival?
My California adventures brought me to one of the most gorgeous campuses I have ever seen. Some students were running to the beach with surfboards in hand while others causally studied amongst the palm trees. This Point Loma Nazerene University Fashionista is the ultimate California girl. Let’s cut to the chase. That jumpsuit. This Fashionista hit jackpot when she found this piece at Goodwill for three dollars. Let me repeat that. Three whole dollars. Talk about an amazing fashion find! The periwinkle colour mixed with the floral print is an ode to the fashionable hippies of the ‘60s. With its psychedelic vibe, this Fashionista’s loose-fit jumpsuit incorporates the super-flared pant, which she pairs with Rainbows Sandals (the quintessential item for any Californian beach goer) for a more laid back getup for a day at school. But Fashionistas, don’t be afraid to wear those daring wedges or sultry heels with the jumpsuit. The transition from day to night is an easy one with any jumpsuit. To give the loose-fitted garment a more defining silhouette, this Fashionista adds on a vintage leather belt. This is an effortless way to add that spark of sophistication and define the feminine waist. The throw over jean jacket from Gap, with its rolled up sleeves and dark denim wash, adds an extra edge of cool and gives the girly outfit tomboy sharpness. And check out that cute “B” necklace from beachy San Diego jeweler, Noon. The Californian ensemble is completed with a leather bag that this Fashionista purchased on Etsy from Canadian creator Little Lion Man.
And let’s just point out one more thing. Amongst these Fashionista’s bangles from Alex and Ani and Fossil watch lies the most darling tattoo, which simply reads “faith.”
California fashion finds diversify in inspiration from up and down the coast. Music, art and action sports are all elements embodied in the heritage and fashion of California. It’s all about playing it cool and chic. If California were a person, it would definitely be a free spirit.
