STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Button Up This Winter

January 26th, 2015 at 2:00am

Button-ups seem like a no brainer when it comes to dressing for chillier weather. Long sleeve button-ups especially are great for Floridian winters because they keep you warm on those 60-degree days. Unfortunately, the oppressive Floridian heat seems to have fried most of the male population’s stylish brain cells. It’s not uncommon to see hoards of guys slouching around campus in lumpy cotton hoodies and ratty athletic jackets. When being stylish is so simple, why do guys continually insist on committing fashion faux pas?

Button-ups are like the mature older cousin of the T-shirt. They come in a plethora of colors, cuts, fits, patterns and prints, making them adaptable for any kind of style, whether it’s preppy, grunge or streetwear-inspired. In other words, they are accessible like T-shirts, but they give an outfit an extra bit of classiness. That being said, button-ups are not exclusively for formal situations.

When guys wear button-ups, they exude this air of dressiness that always convinces me that they have their life together. I may be running around campus perpetually sleep deprived and stressed, but this man has got everything figured out. Pairing a button-up with jeans and sneakers is a great way to keep an outfit from looking too formal, something this Fashionisto is well aware of.

I’ve never understood why more guys don’t wear button-ups. Is it laziness? I can’t imagine anything life changing would have happened during the extra 30 seconds it took you to button the shirt. Plus, I know I’m not the only girl with a soft spot for boys in button-ups.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Every guy should own a button-up because it’s a classic. Not to mention the ladies like it.”
