STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Bow Ties or Nah?

Bow ties were pretty basic back in the day. Monotone colored ties and a black suit. The perfect example of that is the iconic movie character James Bond in 007: through the years, the suits have changed but still remains the black suit and bow tie. In the past few years bow ties have made a comeback. Newer styles, prints and brighter colors. Within those years menswear has started to really influence women’s fashion. Pantsuits have been all over the red carpet, along with bow ties and a white button-down. Bow ties officially crossed gender lines into womenswear in the ’20s and ’30s when the look was picked up by silver screen stars Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn.

When it comes to this style and who best represents menswear with femininity, I always have the same person come to mind, and that is singer Janelle Monáe. She seriously has the whole suit and tie down pat; it is equal parts feminine and non-feminine. The suits fit her curves nicely, the variety of color is limited since her style is a representation of what her parents wore to jobs, she calls it her uniform. YSL has some beautiful silk bow ties out right now.

This Fashionista did a great job styling this look to be less masculine by adding bold floral print pants and a brightly colored bow tie. I’m going to let you in on a little secret…its actually not a bow tie. It’s a necklace! Some of my favorites here and here. Even though it doesn’t have the traditional bow tie shape, from a few feet away you would think it was one too. To finish her look she added a deep burgundy lip color and some black loafer style flats.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “It’s easy to wear darker colors during the fall and blend in with the crowd. Incorporate a pop of color, stand out and brighten your day!”
