There are many things that unite New Yorkers, like public transportation, favorite coffee shops and neighborhoods to name a few. But one theme that seems to stand out is the need to dress in head-to-toe black no matter the season. I am definitely guilty of this, but I am constantly looking for inspiration and for ways to break out of this anti-color mentality.
I spotted this Fashionisto walking out of one of Columbia’s dorms. He definitely stood out amidst a sea of students dressed in the style that I described above. I like how he stayed within one color family for the jacket and pants but varied the tones. The darker color of the jacket is more vibrant and draws attention. It is paired with the powder blue skinny jeans, which add contrast to the look. However, the cool factor doesn’t stop there. This Fashionisto added another unexpected element to the outfit by layering a striped T-shirt underneath the jacket for a fun, patterned effect.
The accessories are simple, but, nonetheless, they add some flavor to the outfit. His canvas tote bag is a nice addition to the outfit, because it provides a neutral color to balance out the strong blue tones. I also like that his jeans are cuffed ever so slightly to reveal his socks and highlight the boots.
So guys, take a cue from this Fashionisto if you find yourself pulling on the same jeans and a T-shirt combo every day. Don’t be afraid to wear the same color on the top and bottom, and remember to mix in accessories. Blue always looks cool, even when it starts to get warm.
