STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Black and Brown

August 18th, 2016 at 2:00am

It’s no secret that black is a universally flattering color, so why is it that we can’t wear it with everything? The black and brown color combo is widely regarded as unwearable because it “clashes”. But this dear Fashionista/os, does not have to be the case! With the right proportions, the black and brown color combination is not only wearable — it’s chic!

Take a note from this Fashionista whose perfectly proportioned outfit easily shows how black and brown may be worn together. The trick is to build an outfit using only one of these colors and then to accent it in small doses using the other. In this look, our Fashionista uses black as her outfit’s main base. She then adds a *small* pop of brown with her fringed chocolate booties and voilà! As simple as that she has created a black and brown look that is easy and understated.

While our Fashionista’s look is très chic, it’s easy for black and brown ensembles to seem dark and heavy. If your look is headed in this direction, lighten things up by playing with the materials of your clothing. In this outfit our Fashionista uses a sheer, flowy cardigan to lighten up her look. Subtle white details and clean makeup also prevent her look from seeming too heavy. However if you’re looking for a more classic look that doesn’t sacrifice sass, simply swap out chocolate booties for black ones and turn your ensemble into one that is all-black.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “You can never wear too much black! I like to mix it up sometimes and add some brown for some color.”
