Birkenstocks? Fashionable? Yes, I just went there. Though you might think these shoes to be far from stylish, you may just have to think twice. Check out this Fashionista I found sporting the classic sandals that are on their way to making a major fashion comeback.
Traditionally, when we think of Birkenstocks, we think of tourists who have completely sacrificed fashion for comfort. This season though, they may just have been the most buzz worthy footwear on the spring/summer runways. Fashion houses Céline, Miu Miu and Giambattista Valli all showcased the “it” sandal in their lines. From mink lining to jewels to studs, designers had brought back a Birkenstock 2.0 per say.
It looked like this Fashionista was ahead of the game. She wore her classic sandals for a very bohemian-inspired look. Paired with a basic tank, a patterned cardigan she scored at Goodwill and DIY high-waisted denim cutoffs, she managed to create an easy look that was still chic and comfortable.
Nevertheless, this trend is rather new. There will be those who have always loved their Birkenstocks and there will be those who think they’re the next-worst things to Crocs. Either way, it’s apparent that they’re making a major statement in the fashion world.
And while we unfortunately can’t all afford Céline, no worries, Fashionistos/as. Birkenstocks are totally affordable. Apparently, they’re so great that major fashion icons like the Olsen twins have been spotted sporting them on numerous occasions. The Gizeh, which seems to be the Olsens’ favorite, sell for as low as $90. This Fashionista is wearing the classic Arizona, the shoes that were made over and premiered on runways for this spring/summer season.
So whether you’re still bewildered by this Birkenstock trend, or are ready to hop aboard, it wouldn’t hurt to try the sandals on for a spin. They’re affordable, comfortable and really easy to wear. Just make sure you skip the fanny pack to avoid any cliché tourist looks.
