STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

As the great Kanye West has said, “black is the new black.” Yeezus is right. Black is dependable; it goes with everything and is universally flattering. Fashion icons like Angelina Jolie, Grace Coddington and Audrey Hepburn are especially known for donning the dark hue often.

Black’s designation as the color of fashion began way back in the 14th century. Even then, Fashionistas/os knew that black was not simply a color. It is a lifestyle. It is complex. Shades of black include ebony, charcoal, onyx, slate, jet, licorice, obsidian, midnight and more recently, vantablack, a hue so dark that the human eye cannot understand what it is seeing. This black is so intense, our bodies physically cannot comprehend it. Obviously,  black is powerful. Use it to your advantage, just as this Fashionista does.

She looks chic and comfortable in her noir outfit. While the pieces are monochromatic, their quality is fantastic. Her crop top and high-waisted jeans play with length. The slight heel of her boots take this concept even further. The key to an all-black outfit is to accessorize. This Fashionista sports gorgeous gold jewelry, and again uses her necklaces to vary length. The addition of her bag is quite interesting. Normally, Fashionistas/os stay away from mixing brown and black. However, the addition of this chestnut purse throws an unexpected new color into the mix, without drawing attention away from her full ensemble. Her scarf achieves the same goal, doing so by mixing black with a dark blue color.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Black is awesome, but to elevate your outfit, mix intricate old accessories with clean new stuff. For example, my vintage purse adds some character to this simple outfit.”
