As a self-proclaimed Fashionista, I pride myself on being versatile and open-minded in regards to new and emerging fashion trends. I have leather jackets, studded jean vests, silk floral shorts and polka-dotted tops to name a few items. My point being, I try not to stick to one style, and I love to mix and match trends. The “preppy” or “classic” look has never quite seemed to make an appearance in my shopping bag or closet.
Collared shirts, nautical stripes and even tailored button-down tops have never managed to catch my eye. This Fashionista, however, reminded me that the preppy look can just as easily be used to mix and match trends.
Sporting an adorable collared shirt dress and an animal print satchel bag, this Fashionista looks fit for any summer occasion. It’s no surprise that I spotted her on the streets of a quaint Connecticut town since their style is always a bit more classic, but she looks fresh and fashionable nonetheless.
This Fashionista both inspired and reminded me of how easy it is to get stuck in a fashion rut. It’s so important to branch out! Think of your closet right now, and mentally note how many pieces you have that all look like (or are actually) from the same store. Do you have five plus maxi skirts hanging side by side? Does all your outerwear come in the form of a structured blazer? Do you have a shoe collection consisting of every color Converse sneakers? If you answered yes to any of the above or can think of a similar scenario, it is time to spread your wings, Fashionistas!
If you’re like me and have never truly given the tailored look a real shot, I spotted tons of drool worthy pieces on my Connecticut visit to help jump-start your look. For starters, simply add a collared shirt to the mix, and work from there. You don’t have to pair it with khaki shorts and boat shoes, but it is a great starter piece.
Collared shirts are a timeless style that can be found at most any store you love to shop. Even Urban Outfitters sells the occasional clean-cut, tailored top. To give your collared shirt a more relaxed style, pair it with boyfriend jeans and woven espadrilles.
Since summer is still in full swing, steal this Fashionista’s style and try a shirt dress. They are a perfect and easy way to dress up any occasion with little effort. Style your shirtdress with a funky bag like hers, or add on a summery beaded belt. Swapping out flip flops for simple brown wedges instantly turns this outfit from day to night!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I’m rocking flash tats this season. It’s a hot look to jazz up a classic outfit this summer. Festivals and shows are perfect events to show them off.”
