STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Step Back In Time

Spring classes are over and done with, the weather is heating up and the days are getting longer. Summer is on the horizon, and that means it’s time to break out our footwear designed for warmer weather. One of the biggest trends in footwear this spring/summer season is the gladiator sandal, and this Fashionista is rocking them!

The origin of the modern gladiator sandal can be traced back to footwear that was worn by the fierce warriors of ancient Rome. These sandals were worn strictly for the arena, and the soles were usually studded with hobnails for extra durability. The entrance of the gladiator sandal into the modern fashion scene occurred in the late ‘60s, and had resurgence in the early ‘90s. In the early 2000s the popularity of the ancient sandal exploded thanks to the Russell Crowe movie Gladiator. These super trendy sandals were more recently spotted during the spring/summer 2015 fashion shows in Paris in various styles and heights.

This Fashionista can always be spotted on campus sporting the latest trends, so naturally she would indulge in a pair of gladiator sandals in preparation for the warmer weather. She chose to pair her tan, knee-high gladiator sandals with a coordinated, daffodil yellow lace, crop top and skirt set. Her coral nail polish makes her toes pop against the neutral shade of her sandals. Of course, no college student would be complete without her watch, and this rose-toned boyfriend watch from Fossil perfectly complements her outfit.

Long gone are the days of ancient Roman battles for sport, but the gladiator sandal has stood the test of time and will most likely continue to be a staple in our spring and summer wardrobe for years to come.
