I was hanging out with some girls the other night when a group of my guy friends walked in. The boys looked great, but we all had to stifle some giggles because every single one of them was wearing plaid. Although plaid has been around since 1500 BC, it remains a popular, go-to pattern for many designers for everything from shirts to skirts to pumps. Plaid shirts aren’t just for guys anymore. I’ve seen Fashionistos and Fashionistas in plaid button-ups all over campus. Plaid was one of the most prominent trends displayed during last month’s Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, spotted on runways like Derek Lam, Rodarte, Chris Benz, rag & bone and many more. I found this Fashionisto rocking his cobalt blue plaid shirt on his way to class one morning, ready to tackle the fall weather in this comfy look.
Unlike other patterns that may restrict playing with color, plaid provides Fashionistos and Fashionistas alike with endless color combinations. This Fashionisto chose to go monochromatic in an all-blue plaid button-down and navy khaki shorts. I love the cobalt streaks in his shirt that add a bright pop to the pattern with a popular fall color. He finished his outfit off with some leather flip flops for an effortlessly cool and comfortable look for class.
Plaid button-downs are a great piece to invest in for both girls and boys this fall due to the many layering options they provide. With the recent menswear trend, girls stealing from their brothers’ and boyfriends’ closets has never been more popular. Try an oversized plaid shirt, like this Fashionisto’s, to layer with cotton V-necks, fall scarves and jean jackets. There are also many ways to make plaid shirts feminine by buying items with a fitted waist, studs or cutouts like this shirt from Forever 21. If you love this trend as much as I do and are ready to be more adventurous, try incorporating plaid into your wardrobe in other ways, like with a circle scarf or a cute pair of plaid flats.
No matter how you wear it, plaid is a must-have for fall. Have fun mixing and matching colors and prints to showcase your personal style while staying comfy and warm for class.
