STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Pattern Is Worth A Thousand Words

July 6th, 2015 at 2:10am

I have come to the realization in my quest for Fashionistos that the majority of men tend to stay away from any pattern besides a basic stripe or plaid. These entirely too predictable patterns make guys blend right in amongst a sea of flannels and tees. Fear not, boys. Pattern play is a great way to take your look from basic to unexpectedly hip. Seriously, imagine this Fashionisto’s outfit with just a plain navy button-down. It would have been just another forgettable outfit that I would have likely overlooked. The pattern makes the look!

I love the unique hexagon-meets-floral design on this Fashionisto’s tailored short sleeve button-down. It takes a lot of guts for a guy to sport a floral print, but this masculine take on a floral is totally wearable for even the manliest guy. The sharp geometric lines compliment the flower shape to create the perfect balance of masculine and feminine. The various tones of blue and white in the shirt create interesting dimension throughout.

This Fashionisto paired some olive green skinny jeans with the bold button down, contrasting nicely with the rich navy blue in the shirt. He finished the look off with a pair of crisp charcoal gray Ralph Lauren high-top canvas sneakers. Short sleeve button downs are one of the biggest trends for men this year, and I think they are one piece every guy should invest in to easily add modern style to their normal look.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “I don’t think guys should be afraid of trying different patterns. Especially on clothes that have such a classic cut like this shirt, you really can’t go wrong. It’s easy to incorporate patterns into your existing go-to outfits— it’s not like your trying out some crazy new design in the cut of the clothing. It’s just a print. It’s an easy way to keep things fresh.”
