Fashion trends usually tend to go in cycles. We look back to previous decades for inspiration. This year has been no exception. From denim vests to jelly shoes, ‘90s fashion is in full swing and I am loving every second of it. If only ‘90s Nickelodeon shows would come back for good, the world would be a better place—“Amanda, please!” When wearing trends from the past, there rules you should follow in order to not look like you just stepped out of a time machine.
1. Use past decades as only a partial guide. Do not have a head-to-toe look that could have put you on the cast of All That. Mix in modern pieces to give your ensemble an updated look.
2. Some trends should have actually been left in the decade they originated from. Do not, I repeat, do not try and bring tattoo chokers back. Be smart with the trends you choose to follow. If you look back at pictures when you were seven and your butterfly hair clips didn’t look cute, chances are the same outcome will occur today.
3. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to simply try something new or technically, old.
A great start to embracing the style of the ‘90s is with a denim vest. This Fashionista is wearing a perfect example of one with a modern twist. I love the contrast of the feminine floral print and the edgier studs. Fashion is interesting when it is unexpected. Contrasting pieces in your outfit will definitely add a unique flare. Whether the vest is a traditional denim wash or a more updated printed piece, a denim vest is a great staple in any Fashionista’s closet.
She completes her outfit with a simple black tank top, a high-waisted skirt with leather detailing, a pair of black Converse sneakers and Ray-Ban sunglasses. Her monochromatic pieces makes her colorful vest standout. Sometimes it is best to have one piece be the focal point of an ensemble.
This week, I encourage you to look back to the past. Use past decades as your inspiration to create vintage looks with a contemporary spin.
