STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Diamond In The Rust

February 10th, 2016 at 3:59pm

While most girls at Penn State are sporting their puffy parkas in the single-digit weather, one way to stand out when you take your down jacket off in class is with an eye-catching outfit filled with bright pops of color. This Fashionista’s outfit screams trendy winter-style with her vibrant rust-colored button-down skirt, faux fur vest, suede booties and gold accessories.

Although button-down skirts are currently all the rage, the trend actually originated from the ’70s famous button-down A-line skirt. A-line skirts create a flattering feminine look by emphasizing the waist while simultaneously skimming past the upper thighs. This look is perfect for the days where you want to don a skirt, but don’t feel like squeezing into a skin-tight pencil skirt. Tan or rust colored suede, dark wash denim and burgundy corduroy skirts are perfect winter tones that can easily provide more options to match.

This Fashionista’s faux fur vest is also another hot style for this winter season. While faux fur creates a chic look and adds extra texture to an outfit, it also provides a fabulous warm and cozy layer to keep you feeling toasty in the chilly weather. Taupe-colored faux fur provides an earthy, all-natural look to this Fashionista’s outfit. She also wore tan-colored suede booties to match with her vest and essentially tie her entire outfit together.

To accessorize, this Fashionista complemented her outfit with a few pieces of gold jewelry. The gold hoop earrings provide a classic accessory that has stayed popular ever since the disco era of the ’60s and ’70s. She also added a simple black choker necklace to add a ’90s edgy element in her look. To keep her look more modern and sophisticated, this Fashionista also sported a gold watch.

When putting together a retro-inspired look, I have discovered that it’s perfectly okay to mix and match different styles from different decades. In fact, it creates an even more unique look to your outfit. So go ahead, ask your mom if you can borrow some of her clothes and accessories from way back when to mix and match with your modern style and own your bold look!
