Love them or hate them, couples seem to be popping up all over this semester. While hand-holding, smooching love birds are an annoyance to some and a beautiful thing to see for others, there is no denying the power and confidence of a well-dressed couple. While I am one of the few who genuinely love to see a young couple obviously in love, if there is one thing I love even more, it is a stylish couple.
One sign of a couple that clearly thinks on the same page is a couple that dresses on the same page. While this is definitely not to advocate the 2001 Britney/Justin head-to-toe matching denim look or the 1999 David and Victoria Beckham Versace leather fiasco, there is definitely a more subtle and modern way to stylistically match your beau without having to wear identical leather jumpsuits.
This European power couple perfectly embodied the right way to match your significant other. Both dressed in different shades of white, black and gray, this power couple demanded attention as they walked down the street together. For both this Fashionisto and Fashionista, layering also proved to be important for keeping warm and playing with texture. While she layered her white mesh sweater with a shaggy fur vest and an oversized black and white wool jacket, he layered a long black wool coat over his acid wash collared shirt.
Not only did this couple match with their slouched black pants, their classic color palette and their oversized jackets, they also both played close attention to detail to subtly distinguish their outfits. This Fashionista used the texture of her black leather pants to set her apart from her Fashionisto counterpart, while he used a pop of color in his burgundy socks to differentiate himself.
To match your partner without appearing like twins, try to play off of each other’s styles while incorporating your own through details. Color, texture and shape can also help balance the details of your and your partner’s dress without looking overly contrived.
