STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: 90’s Revival

The world is a cyclical place.  Seasons change from hot to cold to hot again.  The moon cycles through eight phases each month.  Most importantly, fashion trends go in and out of style constantly.  What is cool one year definitely won’t be cool the following year.  Don’t worry if you just spent 300 dollars on a pair of trendy jeans that are now out of style.  If you wait ten years, I promise you they will be cool again.  The clothing and styles of the 1990s are certainly no exception.

The 1990s were infamous for trends such as choker necklaces, Doc Martens, flannel, denim jackets, and slip dresses.  Although these garments may have been in hibernation for a while, they have definitely been making a comeback in recent years.  This Fashionista was spotted on campus looking effortlessly grunge, a classic characteristic of 1990s fashion.  She was wearing a pleated plaid skirt, graphic t-shirt, and a denim jacket covered in pins and patches.  To complete her outfit, she added a pair of white slip-on Vans sneakers, a clear choker and a black leather belt.  Her look screams classic 1990s fashion while still looking very modern.

If you are looking for some new fashion inspiration from decades past, take a page out of Cher Horowitz’s book and rock a brightly colored plaid skirt.  If you are feeling especially brave, pair the skirt with a matching plaid blazer.  However, this bold Clueless look may not be for everyone.  For a more toned down 1990s look, pair a plaid skirt with a jean jacket or try putting a t-shirt under a slip dress and tying a flannel around your waist.  You can pair both looks with a choker necklace and a pair of Doc Martens.  No matter which 1990s trend you decide to try, make sure to do so quickly.  These grudge looks won’t stay in style forever.
