STYLE ADVICE: Landing Your Next Internship

It’s that time of year again: internship hunting! This is a particularly stressful time of year for college students because as they approach their senior year, having experience in their field is crucial. This experience often comes from internships or past jobs, so students realize attending career fairs and networking events are a must, in order to best prepare themselves for graduation. These events are nerve-wracking, because you’re speaking to recruiters that you’ve never met before, putting yourself in competition with hundreds of other students, and hoping you’re not just another resume in a pile of over 200.

This year, my advice to you is to stand out! Although many of us prefer comfortably blending in the background that will not land you your dream internship. One way you can stand out is through a lasting first impression. A recruiter might take 20 seconds to decide if they like you or not, sometimes even before you begin talking. So, first impressions are everything. In order to make the best first impression, there are three things you will need: a resume on heavy resume paper, a rockin’ business professional outfit, and confidence.

This Fashionista is wearing the perfect example of a memorable business professional outfit. Her outfit is professional as she paired black pumps with black blazer, yet her look adds a little flair with the coral dress underneath. This outfit is sure to catch a recruiter’s eye.

Whenever I am attending an event, it is important to keep your blazer and pants to neutral tones, however the top or dress underneath can be colorful. I love the coral dress this Fashionista has on because it complements her skin tone wonderfully and it is a statement piece. The dress is of appropriate length and fit for a professional event, yet the coral color with simple details makes it more fun and fashion-forward. Regarding accessories, keep them minimal when attending a networking event. Big bulky necklaces and bracelets will be distracting to the recruiter and give off the vibe that you aren’t serious about the job. This Fashionista wears a dainty necklace with pearl earrings which portrays some pizzazz to be memorable, but it’s not overbearing.

Remember, when you are talking to a recruiter they want to get to know you. Make sure your outfit is an honest representation of you. What are you passionate about? If it’s fashion, maybe add a funky blouse under your blazer. If it’s finance, keep it more professional.
