STYLE ADVICE FOR THE WEEK: That '70s Show

June 9th, 2015 at 2:10am

When I caught this gorgeous Fashionista stretching her legs in our beach town Saturday morning, I couldn’t resist capturing the awesome ’70s vibes radiating from her classic outfit. We strolled over to the local succulent wall to showcase her unique look.

When creating an outfit with vintage influences, it’s important to strike a balance. Dressing too closely to the fashions of a past era can look campy or costumed, but if one does not dress closely enough, the trend can be lost completely. The best way to translate a vintage ensemble into present day is to offset the period pieces with classic up-to-date items. This Fashionista nailed it perfectly: her round sunglasses (which I happen to own myself), white off-the-shoulder peasant blouse and leather sandals channel the cool hippie flair of the Me Decade, while a slicked back bun and cut-off jean shorts keep it modern. Vintage turquoise jewelry rounds out the look because of its relevance to both past and current eras. The beauty of this look is not a particular article of clothing that stands out, but rather a poised collection of simple items that complement each other.

So this week, don’t be afraid to don clothing that rings in the crazes of past decades. Perhaps test out a lipstick application dated to the ’20s, a crop top from the ’90s or anything in between. (Be on the lookout for future articles on the aforementioned…)

What is your STYLE ADVICE FOR THE WEEK? “This outfit was kind of a no brainer for me. It seemed laid back enough to chill under the sun today but still put together. Plus it gave me a chance to rock my favorite necklace and shades.”
