STYLE ADVICE: Back to the Basics

When it comes to separates, I am devoted to basics and essential pieces. I like to describe these essential pieces as “must have pieces” that a female should not live without. One must have piece I believe every Fashionista should own is a white button-down shirt.

Your first thought when you read white button-down might be traditional. Professional nine to five? And/or uniform related? But, there are ways that you can make it your own, so keep reading!

Separately the white button-down can be mixed and matched, styled differently for a specific outing or occasion. You can tuck it in a high-waisted pencil skirt with heels for an interview. You can also pair it with a flared sailor pant and wedge heels. Another option would be to layer it under a sweater or under an open blazer. For a not so traditional look, you can roll up the sleeves to three-quarter length or leave enough buttons open at the bottom of the shirt to tie a front knot. Finally, you can try a white button-down shirt dress. Try being extra creative by using a men’s white button-down shirt as a dress. Options! Take your pick!

As seen on this Fashionista, she wore an untucked white button-down with black skinny jeans and over-the-knee black boots. Her choice to wear it untucked and to unbutton the sleeves gives off a more relaxed vibe to her outfit. If you choose to, accessories can always jazz up a minimal look. This Fashionista added a black infinity scarf and a neutral tone hobo bag to complete her look.

Her look can be worn from day-to-night, from morning classes to her midday internship, and finishing the evening on a casual date. To conclude, stay classic and timeless with additions to express your unique style.
