Fashion confession: I love layers and I have no doubt many of you do too. Layering is not only a fashion practicality, but also an acquired skill necessary for any fashion savvy college student. Temperatures are dropping outside, the heat is blasting inside and no one can be sure whether the AC was turned off in certain places (Post Learning Commons I’m talking to you).
The only way to successfully get through a day of shifting temperatures is to layer. To get the layered look, it’s all about proportions. Layering doesn’t necessarily mean pile on every warm and oversized piece of clothing insight, á la Mary-Kate Olsen’s bag lady chic. Instead, think about fitted clothing and various textures.
Contrary to Ms. Olsen's style, oversized is not synonymous with layering. Instead follow this Fashionista’s look and start with tights, a fitted mini skirt and leather boots. Try Madewell’s opaque tights and a classic wool mini from J.Crew for a similar look.
For some style inspiration, try a patterned blouse, like the Fashionista here. Her dark blue and delicate patterned button-down add a bit of variation to the solid colors in her ensemble. The warm colors in the pattern pair nicely with her tan skirt and the bow tied neckline is a charming detail. See Nordstrom for a comparable style in various patterns.
Lastly, a versatile coat is always useful—especially at this time of year. Stack a few bracelets, grab a tote and volià, you’re set to go no matter what the day’s temperatures may be.
To wrap up this post, the more the merrier—so go ahead, layer away!
