10 Ways To Have The Best Spring Break Staycation

March 9th, 2015 at 2:00am

So your spring break plans don’t include a plane ticket, tropical locales and every other line from Will Smith’s “Miami?” Don’t fret—that doesn’t mean your spring break will be any less memorable!

Instead of hashtagging all your friends’ beach photos #FOMO, create some fun of your own with our ultimate spring break staycation guide!

1. Cooking class—No studying for a week means you have time to actually cook a meal that isn’t 1) microwaved, 2) ramen or 3) all of the above. Find a local cooking class. Your roommates will be impressed when you later teach them how to use the oven in your apartment.

2. Karaoke—Because nothing is more fun/embarrassing/memorable than a fun night of karaoke. My go-to karaoke song? “Empire State of Mind” by Jay Z and Alicia Keys. (Yes, I rap and sing both parts. What can I say? I’m multi-talented.)

3. Swim—So you are landlocked and spending spring break in 30-degree temperatures? Big deal. Bring the water to you by finding a local indoor pool to spend the day at. Who says you can’t sport a bikini in the Midwest in March?

4. Volunteer—Contact a local animal shelter to lend a few hours of your time. Playing with kittens and doing good in the world is the ultimate two birds, one stone scenario.

5. Drive—No matter where you live, there is always somewhere fun and new to explore an hour or less drive away. Whether it is a forest preserve, a local jam factory or a folk art museum, make your day trip both about the journey and the destination.

6. Bed and breakfast—Turn your own home into a bed and breakfast. Take turns with your siblings preparing breakfast in bed for one another. Chocolates on the pillow are optional, of course, but greatly appreciated.

7. Read—Just because you aren’t sprawled on the sand doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a beach read. During this week, make a date with you, a new book and an overpriced cappuccino. Looking for suggestions? Check out “Me Before You,” “We Were Liars” or “What Alice Forgot.”

8. Me time—While on campus, you hop from group projects to sorority meetings to nights out with your roommates. Carve out some “me time” during your spring break. Whether it is a relaxing bath or a yoga class, taking time to hang out with your self is actually quite fun and a great way to recharge.

9. Old movie marathon—Switch up your typical Netflix binging routine in favor of some classic movie education. Watch Some Like It Hot, Casablanca and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. You will feel like you had a vacation after being transported back in time to the age of good, ol’ classic cinema.

10. Complete a Pinterest activity—You know all those crafts you pin during your biology lecture? Time to make your pin-spiration a reality. So go ahead—make that mason jar vase, craft that lampshade or patchwork that sweatshirt.
