Style Guru Bio: Sophie Southworth

Style Guru Bio

Hello fellow fashionistos/as! My name is Sophie Southworth and am honored to represent my campus as Style Guru this summer!

I was born and raised in New Hampshire, attended a prep school in Maine, lived in Paris for six months studying language and fashion history and am currently enrolled as a senior at the College of Charleston as an Art History major and a French minor.

Although I have switched continents and states multiple times, my awareness of trends has not waned.  The playful vibrancy of Charleston’s aesthetic contrasts deeply with the simplicity of New Hampshire’s style and the polished glamour of Parisians; I have become a product of all three.  With each geographical change I have made an effort to expand my fashion horizons without losing touch with my roots. I fell in love with each location because of their unique attentiveness to style and beauty.  Sidewalks are my personal runways; I am constantly taking notice of unique and fabulous outfits in an attempt to expand my mental closet.  My attentiveness to fashion is natural and I embrace every opportunity for my signature looks to evolve.

I still find great comfort in blazers and button-downs from my prep school days but have been inspired to update my minimalist looks with unique Parisian and southern accents.  I will nearly always been found with my hair in a classic French chignon sporting an oversized oxford or simple blouse, and vintage denim shorts.  Black and white are the foundations of my palette and I insist on being comfortable but never sloppy.  I am obsessively matchy-matchy however I can’t leave the house without something unexpected such as a pair of gold smoking slippers from France or a piece of my grandmother’s bold costume jewelry.  My clothing, accessories, and cosmetics are a direct reflection of my identity and passions.

Marilyn Monroe's natural sex appeal, Gabrielle Chanel's flawless sophistication, and Brigitte Bardot's effortless confidence motivate and inspire my own identity and strength.  I am deeply affected by these timeless icons and infuse my energy and wardrobe with the splendor of their spirit and fashion authority.  Blogger Leandra Medine “The Man Repeller”, New York Times street style photographer Bill Cunningham, and Beauty Department editor and makeup artist Amy Nadine are my fashion idols.  I worship their taste, heart, and sass; they have inspired me to pursue this position as a Style Guru and I look to their body of work for guidance everyday.

I look forward to keeping my readers updated on Charleston trends every Thursday in the column “All About Beauty”.  The cosmetic statements I find on the streets of Charleston as well as my personal taste will hopefully inspire my readers to take chances and to be bold with their beauty.  Make a statement; wear bright lipstick to a party, try a chignon instead of a ponytail, and never forget or doubt what shapes your personal style.
