While roaming Journal Square Plaza in my hometown of Jersey City, I rarely see any dressed-up or fashion-forward citizens. Therefore, I was not expecting the sight before my eyes. I spotted a fabulously bundled up Fashionista wearing a plain blue canvas coat with leggings tucked into patent leather boots. What truly caught my attention were not her garments, but her accessories.
She wore a coffee- and gray-colored faux fur hat topped with bear ears and hand-warming pockets. I love faux fur additions to any wardrobe, and this hat is functional as well as fashionable. I also noticed a vintage-looking leather bag strapped around her body that I knew from its huge size served its purpose for a college student. Despite the cold weather, she was able to make a fashion statement and mix in her own personality in this winter look.
Name: Dailyn Alvarez
Year: Freshman at Hudson Community College
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Dailyn Alvarez: I am wearing fitted black Zara leggings and Burberry patent leather boots. I got my coat from Macy’s.
CF: And where are your hat and bag from? I love them!
DA: My hat is actually Neiman Marcus; they had a line with Target over the winter. My bag is Coach from three winter seasons ago.
CF: What is a staple in your closet?
DA: My silk Zara shirt. It’s a white button-up blouse. Everyone should have a white silk shirt. You can wear it with some jeans, leggings or a skirt with nude pumps.
CF: Who are your style inspirations?
DA: My mother and my sister. I grew up in a house where my sister was a beauty advisor for most of her life. I get my style from them and watching them apply make-up and getting dolled up.
CF: How would you describe your style?
DA: I don’t really have a style. I change it up. Sometimes, I wear black lipstick and look like a vampire. Other times, I like to chic it up, and I’ll wear heels and a nice outfit with jeans.
