TREND: Updated Classics, Part 2

A male friend recently said to me, “It’s so much easier for men to dress stylishly than women.”

I’ve been thinking about that statement for a few days now, trying to decide if I agree. And yet, I’m still not sure. Maybe, from his perspective, men have fewer options when it comes to dressing; thus, it’s harder for them to choose poorly. But with those fewer options comes the other truth: it’s much more difficult for men to differentiate their style from one another.

Then, when I came across this Fashionisto on campus, I was struck by the way his style stood out despite the fact that he was clad in very classic, standard pieces. Though he was wearing an oxford, chinos, wayfarers, and boat shoes—three staples in modern menswear—he looked completely unique, and totally fashionable.

With a few decidedly quirky touches, this Fashionisto took his look from standard to splendid. Today’s Fashionisto donns an ascot—an item rarely worn by collegiate men—but not just any ascot, an ascot fashioned out of a red bandana. While one might think this to be a terribly random accent, the bandana/ascot somehow completely meshes with the American-prep vibe of the outfit. Today’s Fashionisto also opts for a funky, embroidered belt over the tried-and-true leather option.

These somewhat eccentric yet completely appealing accessories lend a spunky personality to an otherwise-typical outfit. This fashionisto elevates his style status by adding fun and unexpected pieces to a timeless look.

Hint: Tired of the same-old, same-old sartorial choices? Follow this Fashionisto’s lead by inserting hints of personality and eccentricity into your daily fashion routine.
