ACCESSORIES REPORT: Out Of This World

Accessories Report

As of late, the science fiction genre has hit an all-time high in popularity. What with Doctor Who becoming a cultural phenomenon, Trekkies running amok and the general excitement created by NASA’s most recent rover, it’s difficult to resist being wonderstruck by the mysteries of the universe. While a lot of Fashionistas may not feel like sci-fi conventions are their thing, who says they can’t bring the sci-fi vibe into their wardrobe? Enter the galaxy print. This stellar style was first made popular by Christopher Kane’s wildly imaginative resort 2011 collection. Since then it's been exploding all over the fashion scene with the likes of Vivienne Westwood’s handbags and Black Milk’s leggings, to name a few.

This Fashionista owned the trend with a pair of galaxy print leggings, white Dr. Marten boots and a simple button-down shirt. Because this trend carries astronomical amounts of drama, it's best to make a galaxy print piece the focal point in an outfit; when bogged down with other statement pieces, the trend can look overdone and gaudy.

As with all great trends, the possibility for an awesome DIY project is ever-present. All it takes is a little bleach, fabric paint, this tutorial and a lot of creative juice.

Lesson learned: You do not need an intense sci-fi convention or boring astronomy class to get in on the galactic action. Pull on a pair of these galactic leggings instead. They give a whole new meaning to “geek chic.”

Spotted: Galaxy print took over Jeffrey Campbell’s shoe collection with Black Milk this year.
