When it's 100+ degrees outside, the thought of putting real clothes on seems like an impossible task. Even for us Fashionista/os, whose lives pretty much revolve around what we wear, making outfits work in the summer heat is an obstacle far too familiar. This week's UIUC Fashionista puts everyone else who chose to succumb to the heat and settle for the lightest and airiest clothes they own (including myself) to shame. Her style is truely inspiring, offering a classy and sophisticated, slighly Afrocentric vibe brought to life by her high-waist black skirt, cropped striped top, head scarf, an armful of bangles and stylish earpieces.
Fashionista: Bianca Gay
Major: English
Year: Senior
College Fashionista: How would you describe your style?
Bianca Gay: Fun, ecclectic, somewhat random. A lot of what I put together is just whatever I happen to find in the morning.
CF: What are your go-to summer items or accessories?
BG: When it's so hot like this, I pile on jewelry to spice up my outfit, rather then laying on more clothes. But definiely earrings are my favorite. I absolutely love ear cuffs this summer, too. My hair is always short so they showcase earrings nicely.
CF: What inspires your style?
BG: My friends and my mom's closet. I read a lot of fashion blogs, too, so I get a lot of ideas and inspiration from those. Clothes on the rack inspire my just as much. If I see something I like parts of, I'll take it home to my sewing machine and work on it until I have something completely different and my own.
CF: What are your favorite shops or designers?
BG: I don't really have any favorite designers. It really doesn't matter much to me who makes it, but rather how it fits into my life and style. I do a lot of vintage shopping at little boutiques here and there. I also find a lot of good stuff at Salvation Army. I've really been getting into American Apperal lately. They're very trendy.
How To: A high-waist skirt and cropped top shows off this Fashionista's slender body and gives enough leave to be comfortable in the heat. A head scarf and lots of jewelry take this outfit from comfortable to classy and chic, which is perfect for day or night-time.
