STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Boyfriend Jean

Style Advice of the Week

Last weekend it finally started to feel like fall in NOLA when temperatures dropped below 70 degrees, and even hit into the high 40s at night! Fashionista’s around campus did not spare any time whipping out there boots and sweaters that have been sitting in their closets since last winter. It seemed like an undisclosed uniform of scarves, sweaters and skinny jeans tucked into boots was ubiquitous. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I spotted this week's Fashionista sporting a refreshingly different transitional fall look. She paired a cute fitted, but not too tight, tan sweater with flats, a colorful woven tribal backpack and my favorite part of this outfit: boyfriend jeans.

This style of jeans is characterized by cuffed hems, loose but not too loose fit and sits low on the hips. The boyfriend jean is the perfect mix of a put-together look that has laidback casualness to it. Choosing to wear this style jean instantly creates an overall effortless feel to your outfit. This Fashionista demonstrates how boyfriend jeans can be worn casually but you can also dress them up with a blazer and heels. If and when you decide to purchase boyfriend jeans, it’s important to find the right balance of looseness, they should be slim, but not tight. If they are too baggy then they make you look ragged, and if they are too tight then they are just not boyfriend jeans. Current/Elliot has a great version of the boyfriend jean that many stylish celebrities have been seen wearing. For a more budget-friendly option, check out this pair from Gap. For a different look, Asos has a trendy version of the boyfriend jean in a light wash and ripped detail. Boyfriend jeans are the most underrated denim cut that are just as versatile as skinny jeans and can be worn with almost everything, bonus points for level of comfiness.
