This week's Fashionisto shows us how to wear the ultimate in understated footwear — the loafer.
The loafer was created during the mid-1930s in Norway and quickly became popular after American visitors fell in love with the shoe and featured them in an Esquire magazine editorial. They were adopted by lawyers and college students alike; their comfort, style and versatility made them a staple shoe in most wardrobes.
The best thing about loafers is that they are completely comfortable and, for the most part, completely unisex. Ladies as long as they have your size, always try them on. The lace-less sillouette couldn't be easier to wear so be brave like this week's Fashionisto and go for lush suede or patent leather to add a touch of class to your outfit. Loafers are a luxurious, lounging shoe. I love these Ralph Lauren Quinly suede loafers and I'm sure my girlfriend does, too. We'll split the cost and share them (I'm not one hundred percent sure how that will work, though!)
This Fashionisto has chosen the Christian Louboutin studded rollerball loafers, worn by none other than Kanye West in a black colour way. Take a look at these Alexander McQueen embroidered velvet loafers. You can bring them out for black tie events or pair them with slim fit denim with no problem. It's all about simplicity here; choose a pair of loafers when looking for a shoe that epitomises smart casual.
