There are so many contemporary novels on the market now that sometimes one can forget the great American literary classics, such as The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird and Jane Eyre. However, once we recall their greatness and realize that most authors today have been inspired by the literary geniuses of the past, we become newly obsessed with these classics. Hence the recreation of movies based on these novels, such as The Great Gatsby. Fashion is quite analogous, in that sometimes we get caught up in new trends such as studded denim and crazy prints. While each trend that arises every season is unique in its own way, there always lies a special place for the classic pieces that, no matter the season, will work. Likewise, no matter which decade we are in, the American classics will always stand as the epitome for highly praised literature.
When I saw this Fashionisto’s outfit, I instantly described it as clean-cut and fresh. He has no wild patterns and no asymmetrical cut knits, but rather a simple convertible collar peeking out of a striped knit, colored denim and oxfords. His slicked back hairstyle adds even more classicism to his entire look. Here at University of Texas, I have been surrounded by either frat boys who refuse to wear anything other than wrangler jeans and polos or hipsters who usually do not put much effort into their wardrobes. Upon seeing this Fashionisto, I was reminded of a classic style, one that is not very common yet very fashion-forward. This Fashionisto sports a fresh and simple look, although he does incorporate a dark hue of colored denim, a current trend. The alternation between gold and navy stripes on his knit sweater from Zara creates a dynamic element for his look. His Cole Haan oxfords emphasize classic menswear the most. This Fashionisto does an excellent job recalling the quintessential pieces of menswear.
Hint: If you think about it, without the classic pieces in menswear, the crazy pieces that designers such as Jeremy Scott create would not be so novel. While you can get caught in seasonal trends, never forget the roots of menswear! Try to bring back this look into your outfits by sporting a simple monochromatic button-down and oxfords. You can add a jacket lined with an interesting print if it seems too simple!
