How To Get Away With Wearing Sneakers to NYFW

Created with Reebok + Finish Line

Sitting in my dorm room my junior year of college, I received an email informing me that I would be working a New York Fashion Week show. In my collegiate weekend attire of leggings and a sweatshirt, panic ensued. My mind was immediately filled with images of Carrie Bradshaw strutting into Lincoln Center (RIP) wearing heels and a mini skirt in the dead of a brutal New York winter. I love Carrie as much as the next girl, but taking on fashion week in heels would result in my untimely death.

After hours of scrolling through images of my favorite bloggers and editors, one fact became very clear. A lot of them were wearing sneakers. Most (if not all) of my favorites had full-on embraced the athleisure look from head to toe. With their effortlessly cool vibe, these were looks I could get behind.

Working that fashion show also made the reasoning behind this choice even more clear. While yes, fashion week is glamorous, it’s also fairly exhausting. Opting for a shoe that will keep you comfortable and on-trend is key to surviving fashion week (and life, to be honest).

When we sent four of our Style Gurus to Who What Wear’s first runway show, they styled the footwear with ease. Below each of them break down four looks perfect for the front row of the runway or the classroom.

THE FULL ON SPORTY

Shelby fully embraced the sports side of sneakers, rocking an old school Yankees bomber with her navy Reebok Deluxe Slip-Ons. The bomber was a hand-me-down from her brother, proving that the best pieces are ones with a story. This tomboy-cool look is giving us some serious Public School vibes.

THE STREET STYLE STAR

In crafting her look, Peyton wanted to feel like she was just as “street style” as the bloggers she followed on Instagram. And if there’s one thing we know bloggers love, it’s overalls. She styled the revered piece perfectly with pops of color in her striped T-shirt and bandana before tying the look together with the shoes we’re about to see everywhere: the Reebok Chelsea sneaker.

THE MODERN GLAM

“Lovely” isn’t typically the word used to describe sneakers, but here we have no other choice. These relaxed Reebok Slip-Ons pair perfectly with the muted tones of Brittney’s fur top and oversized tote. The drama pulled in from the dangling fringe earrings and fur-trimmed sleeves perfectly balances the studs and distressing of her jeans. This modern twist on an unquestionably glamorous outfit proves that the new it-girl goes by Brittney, not Carrie.

THE ‘90S UPGRADE

In the past year, ‘90s babies have led the fashion revival for their decade; weaving the coolest elements of the decade into the latest trends. And if the Adam Selman show is any indication, there’s no signs of stopping. Erika expertly combines denim, leather, and Reebok suede boots to give the all-black style dimension. The fabrics are on pieces you wouldn’t expect, giving this outfit a unique style.
