Recovery Quotes to Help You Be at Peace with Pizza

August 10th, 2017 at 2:00am

I try to stick to a healthy diet as much as the next person—but as soon as the word “pizza” is mentioned, all bets are off. Nowadays, I am happy to indulge in one, two, or 10 slices of pizza, but this has not always been true. I have struggled for a long time with eating disorders that influence my ability to enjoy life as much as I wish I could. I know this is something that a lot of Fashionistas struggle with, so I hope to inspire some girls like me to let go a little with quotes that have helped me to stay motivated and optimistic during my personal recovery.

“The problem is not your thighs. The problem is your head.” -Carrie Bradshaw.

This quote encourages me that no matter how deeply I feel that my body is wrong, that my disorder is only in my brain. By acknowledging that my brain is lying to me, especially when I journal, it helps me to feel better, because I know then that my body is perfect, despite what I may perceive.

“Falling in love with yourself first doesn’t make you vain or selfish, it makes you indestructible.” -Unknown.

Whenever I feel selfish for caring so much about what often seems an unimportant problem compared to others’ struggles, this quote reminds me that fighting my own personal fight first through recovery is the only thing that will make me strong enough to fight for others.

“You have to be odd to be number one.” –Dr. Seuss.

This quote assures me that while my body may not look like the girls’ I see every day, that I need to be different to be the best version of myself. I try to accentuate things that are different about me now, like my nose, rather than try to make them go away.

“Nothing will work unless you do.” -Maya Angelou.

Recovery is so, so hard. Just deciding that you want to get better takes hours upon hours of suffering and work. But this quote reassures me that my work, no matter how small it is, is not in vain. Your recovery will work as long as you try, so whether you start with coloring, journaling, or talking to someone, you will make it.

“And I said to my body. Softly. ‘I want to be your friend.’ It took a long breath. And replied, ‘I have been waiting my whole life for this.’” -Nayyirah Waheed.

This quote makes me cry every single time I see it. It teaches me that my body wants me to be happy, wants me to eat, and wants me to live the greatest life I can. I would never want to let my body down after it has gotten me so far, and this quote motivates me to persevere for it.
