STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Beachy Chic

Style Advice of the Week

Although it wasn’t the only reason I chose a school in California, I must admit living 15 minutes away from the beach is definitely one of the best perks of coming here. Between the ocean surrounding you and the sun always shining down, you can’t help but crave that California beachy style—laid back, comfortable and boho chic. I’m always ready to pack my swimsuit, throw on my summery crochet shorts and a white breezy tank and head down the coastline. While I may be from Chicago, I’ve always been a Cali girl at heart, ready to strut this laid-back look that consumes the Golden Coast.

I spotted this Fashionista on her way to class playing up a classic Cali girl look. She worked her beachy style rocking white denim cut-offs and a black Brandy Melville backless tank, topped off with an adorable fedora and funky jewelry all over the place. This “surfer-gal goes chic” get-up is totally effortless and and cute, ready to be taken all the way down to Newport and flaunted along the shores.

Fashionistas, go for a beachy look like this one and you’ll find yourself feeling carefree and relaxed all day long. Recreating this look is simple as long as you keep a few key pieces in mind.  Stores such as Brandy Melville and Roxy are great places to find beach-bum chic apparel. Try choosing loose, cotton tanks and billowy sweatshirts. Anything crochets is an automatic beach gal yes. In general, choose simple materials, like cotton, for this look. Cali girl style is simple and sexy, not fancy! Also, short shorts are a must—whether they are frayed denim cut-offs or lace hot pants, they are a killer addition to beachy style.  Bright colors are great for this look, too. Try working some mint green pants or a coral toned tank. When it comes to accessories, don’t be afraid to play it up. Woven or beaded bracelets are great, especially when piled up on top of each other. Go for the fedora or sun hat, too—it’s the best excuse to wear this trendy item! The beach girl look is simple, but accessories allow you to spice up the look and make it more fun.

Even if you live in colder temperatures, don’t worry—you can still rock this look in a different way. Try wide leg/flair pants to play it up—Free People has great options for this kind of a style. Also, oversize sweaters are great. Just think of it as going to a late night bonfire near the ocean, old school Laguna Beach style. Even California gets chilly at night! For accessories, fingerless mittens and beanies are adorable. No matter what climate you live in, don’t be afraid to play up the beachy chic look! You’ll be looking good and feeling good.
