STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

Style Advice of the Week

This week's Fashionista was a pop of color amidst a dreary, backdrop of finals gloom. Her patriotic colors, and mix-matched dot prints made her look stand out, and I loved that she took advantage of the abnormally warm December weather. Her outfit was broken up well by blocks of color contrasted with dot prints. Think of this as an updated approach to color blocking. Her scarf kept her look from appearing too “matchy-matchy” color wise, and I loved the solid pieces of red, white and blue.

To get her look, choose bright pops of color and contrast them with duller mix-matched dot patterns. Remember all those floral rompers you bought two summers ago that you haven't worn since? Here's your opportunity. Start your look with a dot pattern romper, something like this style from Free People. Add a patterned tank top over the top; this could be a time to break out a chiffon high-low top like this tank. Follow this Fashionista's lead and break up your look with a pair of sheer colored socks from American Apparel. For added warmth feel free to layer a more substantial sock over it. For rain boots, I'm obsessed with this lady like style from Mel by Melissa. Choose a warm sophisticated option for your coat, since your legs will be naked. This electric blue style from Victoria's Secret gets my vote, because I'm obsessed with toggles. To break up your look even more throw on your go-to scarf regardless of color, this last step keeps you looking effortless.

For further style inspiration, stalk playful collections from Charlotte Ronson, Rebecca Taylor and Lauren Moffett. All three designers combine dot patterns, mix-matching and feminine details. Look through your closet and experiment pairing patterns you normally wouldn't. Mix-matched patterns are a trend that's here to stay, and there's no reason why you should miss out on the fun.
