STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Play on Proportion

Style Advice of the Week

My style advice to you this week comes in the form of shopping advice, as well as general life advice. Never underestimate the importance of keeping an open mind and exploring unexpected places. As I spoke to this Fashionista about her look, I discovered her tye-dye dress is from the plus size section at Zara. When I'm shopping with friends, the person with the best finds is always the one who looks where the rest of us think not to. Limiting yourself when shopping is a mistake, and this Fashionista is here to remind us of that. This rule applies to plus size, children's and men's sections of stores. My closet is filled with cropped T-shirts from the kids section, comfy V-necks from plus size and sweater's from the men's department.

This Fashionista chose to base her look around her oversized find, worn with a simple black bra and basic leggings to maintain a level of comfort. This look is about staples: cropped denim jackets and black infinity scarves should be in your wardrobe. Simple black wedges add some height to this play on proportion, but fill their role as a simple staple. If you don't already own a simple black bra, then I suggest this bralette from Honeydew Intimates. Think of it as a layering piece more than underwear–trust me you'll thank me later. For a shirtdress I recommend this sheer piece from Forever 21. Belt it if you feel the need, or wear it open as a flowing vest. If you choose to wear it open, add this top from BlackMilk underneath for modesty and warmth. Follow this Fashionista's lead with leggings on the bottom–I'm obsessed with this velvet pair from Pitusa. Throw on sneaker wedges, your favorite denim jacket and an infinity scarf and you're ready to go!

Explore the realm of oversized and under-sized clothes for a mixed style that will keep you comfortable and eclectic. As it cools down you'll appreciate the layers and the simplicity of focusing your look on one key piece.
