STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Suit Up

Style Advice of the Week

Gentlemen, the revival of classic suiting is upon us. As our years advance as undergraduates, it becomes necessary to amp up our wardrobes. A suit is essential for every University man; it instantly adds an aura of swagger, sophistication and gentlemanly charm. From James Bond to Don Draper, it’s evident that an impeccably tailored, sophisticated suit is a pivotal investment for any fashionable fellow.

Admittedly, I jump at any opportunity to photograph a sharp dressed man—and this Fashionisto was no exception. He looked dapper donning a lovely lean single breasted navy suit with dual buttons and pointed lapels. The navy suit is a refreshing alternative to the typical black and is easily worn as casual separates. Featured in the Fall 2011 menswear Gucci runway, the navy suit is a sartorial staple. While some see suiting as a chore, I feel it is a perfect pallet to incorporate punches of personal style. This Fashionisto had a bit of fun by expertly fusing a variety of colors, patterns and textures into his ensemble. He looked smart and sophisticated sporting a lovely cerulean Bengal striped shirt and added a perfect pop of color with a pink and blue tie accessorized with a stainless steel clip. Also notable are his slim brown Italian wingtips and on trend grey and black knitted scarf. These key accessories added edge, contrast and a lot of cool.

Guys, I encourage you to have fun with suiting—don’t be an anonymous drone in a dark suit, shirt and tie. While the working world may seem far off, dressing for the occasion isn’t.  Embrace your style and be confident in your creativity, and above all—enjoy what you wear. If you are curious where to start on your suiting excursion, I recommend Zara and J.Crew. Both produce exceptional, quality items at unbeatable prices.
