STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Check It Out!

Style Advice of the Week

What do Scottish Highlanders, Paul Bunyan, the Brawny Man and the Burberry Prorsum fall 2011 menswear line have in common? Any guesses? If you answered “dudes with a passion for plaid,” you’d be absolutely correct (listen guys, we don’t blame you — you look great). Plaid is timeless, classic and essentially a menswear immortal. Season after season, this tartan treasure has popped up on everything from blazers and button-downs to board shorts and boxers. Long gone are its ties with Catholic school uniforms, iconic '90s grunge bands and lumberjacks. As of late a primmer plaid has made its debut.

The Buffalo Check has been incredibly popular on runways this season, and State College sophisticates have taken notice. This dapper gent looked cool and cozy when I spotted him downtown during finals week. Sporting a killer Buffalo Check jacket, he wore a great complementary oatmeal pullover, white tee and cuffed denim.  Also noteworthy are his killer kicks; the suede boots were the perfect polishing point to take his ensemble from ordinary to extraordinary. His outfit proves that Buffalo plaid easily translates from catwalk to sidewalk while simultaneously looking ruggedly handsome.

Buffalo plaid is a great print that leaves lots of room for experimentation. Seen on shirts, sweaters, vests and trousers, this print was featured everywhere from Prada and Burberry to Jack Spade and UNIQLO.  The pattern, whether big or small, boldly dresses up any stylish seasonal look. Try it out yourself with dark denim and boots or smart slacks and dress shoes.
